Eyecare, friends of the Eye Pavilion was set up in 2002 by a group of members of staff who recognised the need for a central fund accepting donations from grateful patients.
The idea was to have funds that would be used mainly to benefit staff and patients. Funding for state of the art equipment was less likely to be funded by the NHS, but would greatly benefit many patients. Monies to fund staff to attend courses or conferences in order to keep skills and knowledge up to date were very hard to obtain. Publicity soon started to bring in donations and was boosted greatly by a substantial legacy.
The management team consists of members of staff at the Eye Pavilion and members of the public (patients, ex members of staff, friends). The group meets four times a year. Applications for funds are considered at these meetings and allocated on accordingly.
A wide range of staff are represented in the group including, Consultants, Nursing staff, Junior Doctors, Technical and Management. The Committee co-opts individuals with specific skills as required.
The group works closely with the Edinburgh & Lothians Health Foundation (ELHF) where the funds are lodged and managed.
